AdBlue: what it is, how to use it and how to prevent injector crystallization
AdBlue is a 32.5% urea solution used on Euro 6 diesel engines with SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) systems to reduce nitrogen oxides (NOx) in exhaust gases. Without AdBlue, the NOx sensor generates errors, the engine warning light turns on and the car may enter reduced mode or fail to start.
How the SCR system works
AdBlue is injected by the SCR injector upstream of the catalyst. On contact with hot gases it transforms into ammonia, which reacts with NOx converting them into nitrogen and water vapor. Result: Euro 6 compliant emissions.
Typical problems of the AdBlue system
- AdBlue warning light on with warning message
- Engine power reduction
- Error P204F (SCR pressure deviation) or P20E8
- Crystallized or clogged SCR injector
- Engine start blocked after the remaining km
Injector crystallization: the most common defect
When AdBlue stagnates, the urea crystallizes and clogs the injector. This causes ECU errors and in the worst cases the injector replacement (€300-600 at the workshop). The problem is frequent on low-use vehicles or short trips.
The solution: PowerTec AdBlue SCR additive
The PowerTec AdBlue SCR additive prevents crystallization by keeping urea in stable solution, even at low temperatures or long downtime. It is poured directly into the AdBlue tank.
Application procedure
- Pour the entire bottle of PowerTec AdBlue SCR into the AdBlue tank before refilling
- Complete refilling with standard AdBlue
- Start the engine and drive at least 20-30 km
- Repeat every refill as prevention
When to use it
- Always on low-use vehicles or short trips (city)
- Before winter to avoid cold thickening
- When you notice ammonia smell from the exhaust
- If AdBlue consumption is abnormal (too high or too low)
