Car Paint Decontamination: Complete Guide with Iron Remover and Clay Bar
What car paint decontamination is
Decontamination removes from paint the contaminants that normal shampoo washing can't: iron particles (fallout), tar, tree sap, limescale, industrial fallout. Microparticles embedded in paint that make it feel rough even when it looks clean.
The bag test
Simplest way to check: after washing, run your fingertip over dry paint with a plastic bag around it. If you feel rough or grainy, contaminants are stuck. A properly decontaminated paint feels smooth as glass.
Two decontamination methods
- Chemical decontamination with iron remover and tar remover
- Mechanical decontamination with clay bar or clay mitt
Chemical decontamination with iron remover
Iron remover (e.g. MA-FRA Fallout) reacts chemically with iron particles: dissolves them and makes them water-soluble. The classic sign is purple/red colour change when sprayed on contaminated areas.
- Wash car normally with two-bucket method
- Rinse and keep paint damp
- Spray iron remover one section at a time
- Wait 3-5 minutes, watch for purple reaction
- Rinse abundantly with low-pressure water
- Move to next section
Don't let it dry in the sun, don't apply to hot paint. Work in shade.
Mechanical decontamination with clay bar
After iron remover, clay bar or clay mitt physically captures residual contaminants: tar, sap, smog, micro-grains.
- Spray lubricant (water + few drops shampoo, or detailer) on section
- Run clay in linear motions (never circular) with light pressure
- You'll feel resistance at first, then smooth glide: area is clean
- Wipe with microfibre and move on
- Knead clay periodically to refresh surface
If clay falls on the ground: throw it away. Sand grain will scratch the paint.
When to decontaminate
- New car before applying wax/ceramic, always
- Used car: 1-2 times/year if parked in city or near railways
- Cars with wax/ceramic: acidic iron remover may attack sealant
- Always before polishing
Common mistakes
- ❌ Skipping decontamination and going straight to polish/wax
- ❌ Iron remover on hot or dry paint
- ❌ Circular motions with clay bar
- ❌ Reusing clay that fell on ground
- ❌ Decontaminating in direct sun
- ❌ Skipping preliminary wash
After decontamination: what to do
- Wax paste or spray for medium protection (3-6 months)
- Synthetic sealant for long protection (6-12 months)
- Ceramic coating for max protection (1-3 years)
Conclusions
Decontamination separates amateur washing from professional detailing. Glass-smooth paint also makes wax/ceramic bond much better. MA-FRA Fallout Iron Remover available on LS Motors in 500ml, 1L and 4.5L. Shipping 24/48h.
