DPF and FAP: how to avoid replacement with the right maintenance
The particulate filter (FAP/DPF) is one of the most expensive components of the modern car. Replacement can cost between £700 and £1,800. Find out how to keep it in good health.
The problem with urban driving
Drivers who mainly travel in the city rarely exceed 60 km/h: the regeneration cycle never completes. The result: the filter clogs until the FAP warning light comes on and power is lost.
How to look after your FAP/DPF
- Monthly motorway run: 30–40 km on the motorway every month
- Preventive FAP additive: Pro-Tec DPF Super Clean lowers the temperature required for regeneration
- Do not switch off the engine during active regeneration
- Use oil certified “Low SAPS”
What to do when the FAP warning light is on
- Add Pro-Tec DPF Super Clean to the fuel tank
- Drive on a motorway for 30–40 minutes
- If the light does not go off after 2–3 treatments, seek professional service
