Car Windscreen Washer Fluid Summer vs Winter: Which to Choose
Why washer fluid matters
Washer fluid seems insignificant, but it makes the difference between safe and dangerous driving. Dirty or frozen glass drastically reduces visibility, and wipers without fluid drag dirt across the windscreen scratching it.
Summer or winter: what really changes
- Summer: max degreasing action for insects, pollen, smog, limescale. More detergent, more surfactants
- Winter (antifreeze): resists freezing down to -20°C / -70°C, contains special alcohols. Cleaning suited for winter dirt (salt, mud)
Using the wrong product is the first mistake: summer in winter = tank freeze, winter in summer = poor cleaning.
Summer fluid
- Crushed insects: surfactants dissolve adhesive proteins
- Pollen: removes yellowish spring/summer film
- City smog: dissolves greasy deposits
- Limescale: some products contain mild acids for water spots
Winter fluid (antifreeze)
- Prevents freezing in tank and lines
- Melts ice formed during driving
- Central-South Italy: -20°C sufficient
- North Italy / mountains: -70°C concentrate to dilute
- High mountain / Northern Europe: -70°C pure
Concentrate or ready-to-use
- Ready-to-use: pour and go. Convenient, large volume
- Concentrate: dilute with water per expected temperature. Cheaper, compact
Dilution table:
- 1:1 → max protection (e.g. -70°C)
- 1:2 → medium protection (e.g. -30°C)
- 1:4 → low protection (e.g. -10°C)
How to fill correctly
- Open filler (blue icon with waves under hood)
- Check current level
- Switching summer-winter: use existing fluid down, then add winter
- Spray several times to prime pumps
- Clean spills (cause haze on paint)
Mistakes to avoid
- ❌ Dish soap or vinegar (damages pump long term)
- ❌ Tap water (limescale and bacteria)
- ❌ Mixing different brands (salt precipitation risk)
- ❌ Summer in cold zones late October (sudden freeze)
- ❌ Empty tank for long (pump dries)
- ❌ Underestimating local min temperatures
Seasonal tips
- Autumn: switch to winter early November
- Spring: stay on winter until mid-March
- Winter salt: double refill frequency in salted areas
- Pre-change wash: spray all old fluid out first
Conclusions
Washer fluid is safety: summer April-October, winter November-March, concentration suited to your area. MA-FRA Cristalbel -20 and Cristalbel Artic -70 on LS Motors, professional formula, shipping 24/48h.
