Tyre Repair Spray: How to Use It and When It Really Works

Is tyre repair spray really useful?

Modern cars increasingly leave the factory without a spare wheel, replaced by puncture kit or nothing. In case of puncture, tyre repair spray becomes the emergency solution that keeps you from being stuck on the roadside. It works, with limits worth knowing before the emergency.

How it works

The canister contains compressed air (to re-inflate the tyre) and a latex-based sealant (to seal the hole). When you screw the canister onto the tyre valve and press the button, pressure pushes the liquid inside the tyre. The sealant distributes with subsequent rotation and seals the hole from inside.

When it works

  • Small diameter hole (max 5-6mm): typical nail, screw or glass puncture
  • Hole on tread: central and lateral tread area
  • Tyre still mounted on rim
  • Recent puncture: use within minutes of puncture

When it does NOT work

  • ❌ Large tears (over 6mm)
  • ❌ Punctures on sidewall
  • ❌ Lateral cuts (impacts, manholes)
  • ❌ Tyre off rim
  • ❌ Very old punctures with tyre flat for long time

In these cases call tow truck.

Step-by-step procedure

  1. Vehicle in safe zone: hazard lights, reflective vest
  2. Locate the hole: rotate tyre so hole is at top — not bottom (gravity helps sealant)
  3. Remove nail if present (unless very large — then leave as temporary plug)
  4. Screw canister onto valve
  5. Press button: hold until canister empty (30-60 sec)
  6. Drive 2-3 km at 50 km/h to distribute sealant
  7. Check pressure after 5-10 min
  8. Reach tyre fitter within 100-150 km, max 80 km/h

Tell the tyre fitter

Inform them you used tyre repair spray: they must clean the inside before repair with plug or patch.
