Teflon Grease: What It's For and When to Use It in Your Car

What teflon grease is

Teflon grease (PTFE - polytetrafluoroethylene) is a semi-solid lubricant combining traditional grease base with micronised teflon particles. PTFE particles deposit on contact surfaces creating a thin layer that drastically reduces friction and wear, even after the base grease is expelled.

4 key teflon properties

  • Very low friction coefficient (~0.04, lowest among solids)
  • Chemical resistance: doesn't react with oil, water, acids, bases
  • Thermal stability from -100°C to +260°C
  • Self-lubricating: works even after base grease expelled

When to use teflon grease in cars

  • Door hinges: smooth, no squeaks, long lasting
  • Locks: internal mechanisms of moving locks
  • Hood and tailgate latches: release mechanisms
  • Seat rails: smooth fore-aft sliding
  • Sunroof mechanism: rails and gears
  • Windscreen wipers: linkage joints
  • Transmission controls: gear lever, mechanical handbrake
  • Exposed bolts: prevents seizing on exposed threads
  • Motorcycle chains: specific for O-ring chains

How to apply

  1. Clean area with degreaser or brake cleaner
  2. Dry well
  3. Shake can or use brush
  4. Apply thin layer (more grease ≠ better)
  5. Distribute by operating mechanism several times
  6. Wipe excess (attracts dust)

Teflon vs other greases

  • vs lithium: teflon lasts longer, extreme temps, costs more
  • vs copper: teflon for smooth joints, copper anti-seize hot (brakes)
  • vs white grease: PowerTec white grease is often PTFE-based → same product
  • vs silicone spray: teflon metal-metal, silicone rubber-metal
  • vs molybdenum: teflon low-medium pressures, moly extreme

Where NOT to use

  • ❌ Brake pads and discs: absolute DANGER
  • ❌ Tyres: grip loss
  • ❌ Drive belts: can slip
  • ❌ Electrical connections: use dielectric grease
  • ❌ Wet bike chains: teflon washes off, use wet grease
  • ❌ Rubber near petrol: may attack rubber long term

Application frequency

  • Door hinges: every 12-18 months
  • Locks: every 12 months
  • Seat rails: every 18-24 months
  • Motorcycle chains: every 500-800 km
  • Exposed bolts: every 24 months

Storage and safety

  • Store at 5°C to 30°C
  • Away from heat or flames
  • Use gloves
  • Don't heat the can
  • Keep away from children

Conclusions

Teflon grease is one of the most versatile lubricants: longer lasting, extreme temperatures, low friction even after base grease expelled. PowerTec White Teflon Grease Spray 250ml on LS Motors, professional concentrated formula, shipping 24/48h.
